Where the New River Begins Its Journey Through West Virginia

The New River begins high in the mountains of North Carolina, flowing north through Virginia before entering West Virginia in Summers County. Unlike most rivers, the New flows northward, carving its way through some of the oldest mountains in the world and shaping the landscapes that define the region.

Just outside Hinton, at Bluestone Dam, visitors can experience the New River as it begins its journey through West Virginia. Here, the river widens and slows, forming Bluestone Lake, offering a scenic and accessible place to take in its beauty.

From this point, the New River continues north, gathering strength as it flows toward the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve—one of Appalachia’s most iconic landscapes. Beginning your journey at Bluestone Dam allows you to follow the river from its peaceful beginnings in West Virginia to the dramatic cliffs and rushing waters of the Gorge.
